Website
Promotion Essentials
Even if you
don't have any money to spend on your website promotion, there are
some things you can do to drive more traffic to your site. You won't
get huge amounts of traffic, but still a steady flow of visitors and
it costs you nothing.
1. Search
engines
Search engines bring you visitors who are really
searching for the information that's on your site. Therefore, use
effective keywords and a good description of your site. When you
have a site dedicated to Bill Clinton use keywords like bill,
president, monica, ... and not white house, America, ... cause
people who are searching for a house in America will find nothing on
your site and they will leave immediate. Use the same rule in your
description.
99% of all traffic coming from search
engines come from the twenty big search engines:
http://www.altavista.com - http://www.askjeeves.com - http://www.directhit.com
http://www.dmoz.org - http://www.excite.com - http://www.go.com
http://www.google.com - http://www.hotbot.com - http://www.iwon.com
http://www.looksmart.com - http://www.lycos.com - http://www.msn.com
http://www.netscape.com - http://www.northernlight.com - http://www.snap.com
http://www.webcrawler.com - http://www.yahoo.com
Don't use
multiple submission services, but go submit your site yourself. It
will take about 20 minutes, but you will be sure all search engines
received your request.
2. Post
messages at message boards
Posting messages at
message boards and in forums will bring you temporary some more
traffic. Don't spam the message boards and never use bad language,
but post clean, useful topics and also take part in other
topics.
The title of your topic is very important. It
has to be provocative but keep it clean. People will pass your topic
if the title is: "Cheaper internet access", but if the title is:
"You pay to much for your internet connection!!" people will
probably take a look at it. A good topic for a Clinton site would
be: "Is Monica back?" and you could say to the readers of the topic
that they can check it out at your site and cast their votes
there.
3. Submit
articles/reviews
Submit articles that you wrote to
site with similar content. When you write an article about: "Bill
and his women" you can submit it to a similar site, for example
billclinton.com (fictive site) and you can put a small notice at the
bottom with for example: "More at Mybillclintonsite.com". When
people like the article they will search for more at your
site.
Therefore ask first two other persons to read
your article so that you know if other people will understand it and
enjoy reading it. Do not submit every article that you wrote to one
site, but to different sites and keep some articles just for your
site.
4. Search for partner sites
Search
two or three sites with similar content, with who you exchange
links, which will be displayed on the first page. Make a cool
button/link with again provocative text.
Don't see the
sites with similar content as enemies, but as friends. You can learn
from them, they can learn from you. There are enough internet users
for all the sites with your
subject.
